Armed conflict, forced migration, climate change, and democratic backsliding don't respect academic silos — which is exactly the premise behind the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development (ILSPSD). This fully funded, two-year programme trains the next generation of international lawyers and policymakers to work across law, security, and sustainability simultaneously, rather than treating them as separate fields.
This is actually the programme's second intake (2027–2029) under its current name — it previously ran under a related EU-funded structure before a successful renewed funding bid brought it back for this cycle, so it's a track record, not an untested new launch.
How the Programme Is Structured
This is genuinely built around mobility, not a single campus with study-abroad options bolted on:
- Semester 1 — Germany: All students begin at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, choosing either an LL.M. or M.A. track, covering Global Security and Peaceful Dispute Settlement, International Economic Law and Sustainability, International Sustainability Law, Sustainable Ocean Law and Governance, Public International Law, and Environmental Law
- Semester 2 — Spain: Students move to Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI), focusing on international security theories, with electives in Human Rights and Education, Law and Practice of the UN, European Human Rights Law, and International Criminal Law
- Semester 3 — Choose your specialisation, at one of four partner universities:
- University of Glasgow, UK — International Law and International Security
- Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium — Security and Conflict
- Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal — Globalization, Law, Security
- University of Tartu, Estonia — International Law and Human Rights
- Semester 4 — Dissertation: research and thesis work at the Semester 3 university, with the possibility of a work placement
