GiveDirectly has delivered more than $1 billion in cash directly to over 2 million people living in poverty across 15 countries since 2011. The organization believes cash transfers are among the most scalable, cost-effective, and dignified forms of aid, supported by research and extensive experience.
GiveDirectly has been recognized for its work by major media and organizations and was named one of Time100’s Most Influential Companies of 2026.
The organization has a candid, analytical, and non-hierarchical culture that encourages high ownership and meaningful professional growth.
About This Role
GiveDirectly moves cash directly to people living in poverty, often in environments where infrastructure and oversight can be limited. Protecting these funds from fraud, whether attempted by external actors, field staff, or recipients, is central to the organization’s mission and donor trust. Internal Audit serves as GiveDirectly’s second line of defense against fraud, and this position plays a central role in that work.
The organization is looking for a Data Analyst who can transform operational, payment, and enrollment data into a clear understanding of where fraud risks are emerging across its programs. The successful candidate will translate analytical findings into recommendations that influence project design and work with the Product team to develop tools that identify fraud earlier and more reliably.
The role combines detailed analysis, clear communication with non-technical stakeholders, and hands-on collaboration with engineers and product managers.
The position sits within Internal Audit and has a dotted reporting line to the Director of Data. This structure helps ensure technical quality, consistency, and standardized analytical and engineering practices across the organization. Internal Audit owns fraud-risk questions, indicator definitions, investigative analysis, and interpretation, while the central Data team manages shared data infrastructure, production pipelines, governed data models, and platform standards.
The Data Analyst will bridge these functions by contributing domain requirements, validation, and quality assurance while ensuring the work follows organization-wide analytical and engineering practices.
You should be as comfortable working in a spreadsheet or SQL environment as you are explaining important trends to country program leaders and recommending appropriate action. Evidence should guide your decisions, while recognizing that an insight only creates value when it leads to action.
Reports to: Senior Manager of Internal Audit
Level: Analyst / Manager
Location: Remote, with a requirement to overlap with an East Africa timezone by at least 3 hours.
Employment is currently available only in certain countries. Candidates should check the current list of eligible countries during the hiring process. Applicants located elsewhere are encouraged to flag their location early with their recruiter. GiveDirectly is currently unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas in the U.S. or U.K.
What You'll Do
-
Analyze fraud risk trends: Examine enrollment, payment, survey, and field-operations data to identify patterns, anomalies, and emerging fraud types, including duplicate enrollments, collusion, identity fraud, and diversion of funds across GiveDirectly programs and locations.
-
Design and oversee fraud-risk indicators: Develop, validate, and maintain recurring monitoring in partnership with the central Data team and operational control owners.
-
Identify data quality issues: Review data currently collected by Internal Audit and help design and implement process improvements to address identified issues.
-
Embed data-driven thinking into Internal Audit design: Identify fraud-related decisions where GiveDirectly could make greater use of data and incorporate data-driven approaches into Internal Audit processes.
-
Translate findings into action: Turn analytical findings into clear and credible briefs and presentations for country teams, operational leadership, and senior management, including practical recommendations for reducing fraud risk.
-
Support fraud investigations: Provide data extracts, quantify potential exposure, and help reconstruct events for individual cases. Ensure analysis is reproducible and audit-ready through documented queries, data lineage, assumptions, exclusions, and quality-assurance checks.
-
Partner with Product and Central Data on fraud-detection tools: Translate validated risk signals into product requirements, provide domain expertise and acceptance criteria, and test whether controls operate as intended while maintaining clear ownership and independence boundaries.
-
Partner with Data Engineering: Work with Data Engineering on upstream data quality and pipeline improvements while owning the downstream analytical layer.
-
Strengthen methodology over time: Back-test risk indicators against investigated cases, monitor precision, coverage, and false-positive rates, and improve indicators based on outcomes and emerging risks.
-
Communicate uncertainty honestly: Clearly distinguish confirmed fraud from suspicious but unconfirmed patterns so stakeholders can make informed decisions without overstating findings.
What You'll Bring
-
4+ years of experience in data analysis, audit, risk, or a related analytical position. Experience in internal audit, fraud/forensics, or nonprofit/development environments is an advantage but not required.
-
Strong SQL skills and confidence working directly with large and sometimes complex operational datasets, including Salesforce, payment, and survey data.
-
Experience using Python for reproducible analysis, automation, record linkage, anomaly investigation, or data-quality testing is strongly preferred.
-
Familiarity with analytical notebooks, version control, and documenting analysis so it can be reviewed and reproduced by others is an advantage.
-
Experience with visualization platforms such as Looker, Tableau, or Power BI and/or Python/R for analysis.
-
Demonstrated ability to transform ambiguous and exploratory analysis into a clear, defensible narrative for non-technical stakeholders.
-
Experience or strong interest in collaborating across product and engineering teams to translate analytical requirements into product specifications.
-
Strong judgment regarding evidence quality, including the ability to distinguish genuine signals from noise and communicate that distinction transparently.
-
High integrity and discretion, as the role involves sensitive information concerning staff, recipients, and active investigations.
-
Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values, including prioritizing recipient wellbeing above all else.
